C-Turns are to get a student comfortable turning into the fall line. They start by facing perpendicular to the fall line and end facing in the opposite direction. The shape is the character C. A C-turn is the same technique to turn as a J-turn, but has a longer duration.

C-Turn

Assessment:

Students should be comfortable moving down the fall line, applying pressure to the outside ski for each direction to turn out of the fall line. (Student’s track’s will have made a J shape in the snow when completed successfully.

Goal:

  • Become comfortable traversing across the hill in their wedge while applying pressure to the outside skis’ inside edge, turning down into fall line and then out of the fall line. When completed this will make a “C” shape in the snow.

Information:

  • The “C” turn essentially uses the same skills as the “J” turn but the student has to initiate the turn earlier in the fall line
  • Have the student start by facing across the slope to start a “C” turn

Practice:

  • Throw a snowball, Lazers and zombies, Hold a snowball
  • Make sure they practice the turn going both ways

Understanding:

  • As always check for backseat ridin’ and all the same problems seen in “J” turns
  • One problem students might run into is being comfortable starting a turn facing perpendicular to the fall line

Feedback:

  • Same solutions as previous steps
  • If the student is having trouble being perpendicular to the fall line have them start by doing one “J” turn first and then use that speed to traverse the run and go into a “C” turn — Techno Jargon: If you’re reading this far go you!!!!!!! You don’t even need Techy words you’re already ahead of the game. :) <3
